Letters of Note: Love, Dad
From Fathers to Sons
I found this wonderful piece
online that holds home-spun truths for the young man who has his mind set on
bidding goodbye to single-hood, nightly hangouts with the boys and youthful revelry.
In this inspiring article, a few days before his 26-year-old son, Michael, got
married in June 1971, future-U.S. President Ronald Reagan sent him a letter of
advice. How I wish fathers wrote their sons such letters today.
Truth be told, relationships take
a lot of work especially marriage relationships. What more can be more beautiful
and a trying experience at the same time than two people learning to live together
as one? People could leave together for decades and never get it right. And it doesn’t
just end there; they will be multiplying themselves in the lives of their offspring,
whom they have been given the divine privilege of nurturing. Your spouse can literally
make or break you. That might sound scary but it is the truth.
It has been said that great
nations rise out of the seed of great families and that the man, supported by
his wife, forms the foundation for strong families because he carries the
vision. Chances are that if the vision bearer is unsure of where he is going,
his family is pretty much headed in the wrong direction. We are talking about
generations yet unborn whose eventual appearance on the ‘earth scene’ has been
tainted by the deed and or misdeeds of their forebears.
Life can be such a cruel
taskmaster sometimes and one of the virtues that it demands of all is a strong
sense of responsibility. Whether you and I chose to ‘pay’ is discussion for
another day. Those who subscribe to the notion that life is more spiritual than
physical, caution that our actions (or in-actions for some) are seeds. For others
it’s a case of what goes around comes right around. While I may not be an
expert on human behavior or relationships for that matter, I still believe that
whatever side of the divide you are on, relationships can bring out the best or
worst in you and the most fulfilling ones happen when you face it with a giving
heart and a willingness to serve the other.
Enough said. Read the article here:Letters of Note: Love, Dad
